Starship Godzilla Brings ‘80s VHS Anime Vibes to IDW’s New Sci-Fi Kaiju Comic

June 24, 2025
IDW’s Starship Godzilla launches readers into a futuristic space adventure with Mechagodzilla and cosmic kaiju warfare - all styled like a lost ‘80s anime. 🚀👾 Starship Godzilla Is the ‘80s Anime-Style Space Epic You Didn’t Know You Needed!
Launching October 1, Starship Godzilla is IDW’s latest addition to its brand-new Kai-Sei era — an interconnected sci-fi kaiju comic universe set in the future.
🦖 But this one’s going galactic. The series is written by Chris Gooch (In Utero) and illustrated by Oliver Ono (Monster Island Summer Camp), whose art is said to feel like “a lost VHS of an '80s space anime.”
🔭 What’s it about?
A ragtag space crew flies across the galaxy inside a Mechagodzilla, tackling kaiju threats beyond Earth — from space pests blocking trade routes to monsters used in galactic wars. But a deeper cosmic conspiracy threatens to tear the crew apart.
Think Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla meets Cowboy Bebop, with high-stakes missions, bizarre planets, and massive space kaiju battles.
📘 IDW’s Kai-Sei Lineup Includes:
Godzilla (July 2025)
Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone (August 2025)
Starship Godzilla (October 2025)
Expect worldbuilding, retro flair, and absurdly cool sci-fi kaiju action.
🧠 Artist Ono says:
“I’m trying to make the worlds feel tangible and fantastical. Look for all the little background details!”
